Pumpkin Roll

There must be something in the air lately — maybe it’s the cooler mornings, maybe it’s the first whisper of fall — because when I asked what you’d like to see in the next baking series, the responses came in fast… and overwhelmingly centered around pumpkin and apple. And not just a few suggestions, either. I received numerous private messages, emails, and comments from bakers who felt very strongly about their favorite fall flavor.

What surprised me most wasn’t the enthusiasm (I adore that), but the division. You were split almost perfectly down the middle — half of you waving the pumpkin flag proudly, and the other half insisting that apple is the true taste of fall. It felt a bit like watching a friendly bake‑off rivalry unfold in real time.

So, in true Quilted Bakery fashion… I’m doing both.

For the entire month of October, we’re alternating every week between pumpkin and apple recipes. And because I couldn’t resist ending with a little flourish, the final week will include two recipes: Apple Maple Scones and Pumpkin Maple Scones. A cozy, crumbly, autumnal sendoff.

This week also feels special for another reason — actually, two reasons.

✨ We hit 4,000 followers!

✨ And it’s officially one year of The Quilted Bakery blog!

I can’t tell you how grateful I am for this community. Your messages, your photos, your encouragement, your willingness to bake along with me — it all means more than you know. To celebrate, I’ll be giving away a few 2027 Quilted Cottage Calendars. Stay tuned for that announcement later this week.

But for now… let’s kick off the October Apple & Pumpkin Series with something classic, cozy, and a little bit show‑stopping: the Pumpkin Roll.

I love making Swiss rolls. There’s something so satisfying about that swirl — that perfect spiral tucked inside a soft sponge. I’ve been working on improving my roll technique over the past year, and this week, I think I finally nailed it. The swirl came out beautifully, which always makes me feel a little better when I have to post a photo of my bake. (We’ve all had those rolls that crack or flatten or look like they’ve been through a bit of a struggle… but not this one!)

This Pumpkin Roll is tender, warmly spiced, and filled with a silky cream cheese frosting that feels like fall wrapped in a blanket. It’s the kind of bake that looks impressive but is surprisingly approachable — and it’s the perfect way to begin a month of cozy autumn flavors. So, grab your mixing bowl, preheat your oven, and let’s roll right into October.

Here’s to the season of sweaters, spices, and slow, cozy moments. May your kitchen stay warm, your quilts stay close, and your days feel wonderfully homey.
