Apple and Maple Treacle Tart

Treacle Tarts are one of those iconic British desserts that are wonderfully simple — golden syrup, breadcrumbs, and a buttery crust. But when I started thinking about this classic bake for the fall season, I wanted to create something that leaned into the colder weather ahead. With apples in season and real maple syrup readily available where I live, they felt like the perfect combination to marry together. Think apple pie meets treacle tart, with a little pecan‑pie energy thrown in for good measure.

This Apple and Maple Treacle Tart has a lovely American twist: maple syrup instead of all golden syrup, diced apples folded into the filling, and chopped pecans for that cozy, nutty warmth we associate with fall baking. It’s still recognizably a treacle tart, but with flavors that feel right at home in an American kitchen.

Now, the thought of adding fresh white breadcrumbs to a pie filling probably seems strange — I’m right there with you. But trust me, they simply thicken the mixture without adding flavor or a weird texture. Once baked, you’d never know they were there. They’re one of the reasons treacle tarts have that soft, almost custardy interior.

The apples bake down into tender little pockets, the maple syrup adds depth and caramel notes, and the pecans give the tart a subtle crunch. It’s cozy, simple, and perfect for fall gatherings, Sunday dinners, or just a quiet afternoon treat with a cup of tea.

If you make it, I’d love to see your beautiful bakes — share your photos on Facebook with #thequiltedbakery so I can admire your creations.

Here’s to the season of sweaters, spices, and slow, cozy moments. May your kitchen stay warm, your quilts stay close, and your days feel wonderfully homey.
